October 18, 2011 Dear Parents and Guardians, A month ago I welcomed you and your child/children to the 2011â2012 school year amidst scattered power outages and much debris from Tropical Storm Irene. Hopefully, you have recovered from damages and have begun to enjoy a more typical autumn in beautiful Old Saybrook. Our students are engaged in rigorous academic pursuits while actively participating in a variety of activities including many sports teams. Please contact your building administrators or school counselors if you have any questions or requests relating to your child or any of our many programs. I have met with each of our Administrators as we begin the first year of our new five-year Strategic Plan, which is published on our District Website. Each of the seven strategies, our main areas of focus, has at least one Action Plan that is the center of a dedicated team's work for 2011--2012. In fact, there are a total of 16 Action Plans to diligently concentrate on this school year. Within the next few weeks, I will be requesting your participation on an anonymous survey to assist us in collecting a variety of information regarding Old Saybrook Public Schools as well as sharing some expanded modes of communication. Typically, in the spring of the school year, our Board of Education approves the Academic Calendar two years forward. This past spring the Board delayed as LEARN was contemplating recommending to area school districts common professional development days and vacations. Although LEARN still has a draft in place, our Board voted to accept an Academic Calendar put forth by our Calendar Committee that included the regional professional development days and common vacations proposed by LEARN. Attached is our Board approved Academic Calendar for 2012-2013. You will note that we have added 7 one-half days. This schedule will enable us to move forward in our new Strategic Plan's Action Steps. Our Administrative Team is working with public and private community agencies to offer you multiple after school opportunities for programs and activities Grades Kâ6 that align with these shortened school days. Scholarships will be available if any of the modest registration fees present a hardship. We will publish a list of these programs and activities before the end of this school year. I wish you and your family a rewarding, and healthy school year. Please feel free to contact the administrator in your child's school or me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely yours, |
